Weekend Packing List for a 1–2 Night Trip

A weekend packing list should fit on one phone screen. For one or two nights you need the outfit you travel in, one or two changes of clothes, a small toiletry bag, chargers and the few things that are hard to replace away from home. Below is a short list to start from, a plan for packing on a busy Friday, and how to keep the list on your phone so packing the bag goes quickly.

What makes a weekend trip different

A long holiday gives you days to prepare. A weekend away usually doesn't: you finish work on Friday, someone picks up the children, and the bag gets packed in the gap between dinner and leaving. Three things help on a short trip:

  • A shorter list, not a smaller version of the big one. If an item is only needed “just in case”, it probably stays at home for two nights.
  • One bag per person, or one shared bag for two. Everything has to fit in something you can carry without checking in.
  • Pack around your plans. A walk in the hills, a wedding, a city with good restaurants — each one changes two or three items, not the whole list.

For a longer trip with documents, insurance and a suitcase per person, see our packing list for vacation. It explains how to keep one master list for the whole household.

A weekend packing list to start from

Cross out what you don't need and add what's missing for your household.

  • Clothes. What you wear on the journey, plus one or two tops and one pair of trousers or a skirt that go with each other, a warm layer for the evening, underwear and socks for each day, something to sleep in.
  • Shoes. The comfortable pair you travel in, and a second pair only if your plans really need it.
  • Toiletries. Toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, a hairbrush, small bottles of anything the place you're staying won't have, glasses or contact lenses.
  • Medicines. Any everyday medicines your household takes, enough for the trip and a day extra.
  • Tech. Phone, charger and cable, a power bank, headphones.
  • Wallet and keys. Bank card, ID, the booking confirmation on your phone, house keys, car keys if you're driving.
  • For the evening. A book, one outfit that works for dinner out.
  • Extras for this trip. Swimwear, walking shoes, a gift for the hosts, a waterproof jacket if the forecast says rain.

Travelling with a child? Add a short section with their spare clothes, a favourite toy and snacks for the journey.

Packing light for two nights

A two-night trip is the easiest place to practise packing light. Choose clothes in a few colours that all go together, so every top works with every bottom. Wear the bulkiest jacket and shoes on the journey. Decant toiletries into small bottles once and keep them in a bag that lives in the wardrobe, ready for the next weekend. Check the weather the evening before you leave and swap one item, rather than packing for every forecast.

The Friday plan: packed before you leave the house

The usual weekend packing problem is not the list — it's the timing. A plan that works for many households:

  1. Thursday evening

Put the bag out and charge the power bank.

  2. Friday morning

Pack the toiletry bag and anything you won't need during the day.

  3. Friday after work

Clothes, chargers, the last few items, and out of the door.

Splitting it this way means the Friday-evening part is short enough to do in a few minutes, even when the day runs late.

Keep a weekend list in Family Errands

In Family Errands the weekend list is a short note, and each trip gets its own errand made from it. The vacation article covers this method step by step; here is the quick version for a weekend.

  1. Write a “Weekend bag” note

Add a checklist with the items above that fit your household. If the list is already in a chat, copy it: in Notes the app offers to create a new note from the copied text, with each line as a separate checklist item.

  2. Create an errand from it on Friday

Open the note and create an errand: a new errand for today appears with the same checklist, while the note stays as it is for next weekend.

  3. Set a reminder that waits for you

Set a time and choose a reminder that repeats until you complete the errand, so the list keeps coming back on Friday until the bag is packed — or use the leave-home reminder below instead: an errand with a place has no time reminders.

  4. Put the list on your home screen

Add the Selected errand widget with this errand, and tick items off right on the home screen as they go into the bag.

Packing with your partner

When two people are going away, share the trip's errand with your partner by tapping their avatar. Everyone it's shared with can see and edit the list, and each item can be ticked separately — so one of you can pack the toiletries while the other finds the chargers, and both see what's still left.

One glance at the door

Add your home as a place on the errand and ask to be reminded when you leave it. The notification shows the checklist, so any unticked item catches your eye on the doorstep rather than an hour down the road.

Questions

What should I pack for a weekend trip?

The outfit you travel in, one or two changes of clothes, a warm layer, something to sleep in, toiletries, everyday medicines, a phone charger, your wallet, ID and keys, plus any extras your plans need.

How many outfits do I need for a 2-night trip?

Usually the outfit you travel in plus one or two more, with fresh underwear and socks for each day. Clothes that all go together let you mix them instead of packing more.

How do I pack light for a weekend getaway?

Choose a few colours that go together, wear your bulkiest items on the journey, keep a ready toiletry bag and check the weather the evening before.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. Family Errands is on the App Store and Google Play, and one family can use both: a partner on iPhone and a partner on Android share the same errands.
