Why a list for each person works
One long list of “present ideas” quickly becomes a jumble: whose was the gardening idea, and was the novel for your sister or your friend? A short list under each name keeps the context:
- One list per person. Partner, children, parents, siblings, close friends, godchildren.
- The idea in their words. “Wants to try pottery” or “said her headphones keep breaking” says more than a one-word note.
- A line about what they like. Favourite colours, hobbies, the things they collect, what they already have plenty of. When no idea is written down, this is where you start.

Write ideas down the moment you hear them
Gift ideas rarely arrive when you are thinking about gifts. They come up in passing:
- Things people mention wanting. “I'd love to learn to bake bread” or “I keep meaning to buy a new umbrella”.
- Things that broke or ran out. A worn-out bag, a mug with a chipped handle.
- New hobbies and interests. Someone took up running, started a herb garden or got into a new series of books.
- Places and experiences. A show they want to see, a café they keep talking about.
Keep the list on your phone, which is with you when the hint comes. If you wait until you are home, most of these slip away.
Share the list with whoever buys with you
When two or more people in a household buy presents for the same relatives, a shared list helps both of you. One of you hears an idea at Sunday lunch and adds it; the other sees it before shopping. You both know what's already planned, so the same present doesn't arrive twice.
Check the list before the date
A list is useful only if you look at it in time. A reminder a week or two before the birthday is a good moment to open it, pick an idea and still have time to buy or order the present. How far ahead to set reminders is covered in how to remember birthdays.
Keep gift ideas in Family Errands
In Family Errands, gift ideas live inside each person's birthday record, next to the date. The full setup of birthdays, reminders and the countdown is in our birthday reminder app guide; here is the part about ideas:
Open the person's birthday
If they aren't on your list yet, add them with their date first.
Add their likes
Each record has a list of likes and favourite things — a good place for hobbies, colours and interests.
Add gift ideas as you hear them
The record has its own gift ideas list. Add a line each time an idea comes up during the year.
Share the birthday with your family
Tap the avatars of the family members you buy presents with. A shared birthday is visible and editable for everyone it's shared with, so they can see the ideas and add their own.
Set a reminder before the date
Add a reminder a number of days before the birthday, for example a week, so the gift ideas list comes back to mind in time.

The same record works for anniversaries and other yearly dates, so ideas for a wedding anniversary can be kept the same way. If you are also planning the party itself, the birthday party supplies checklist covers the rest.
Questions
How do I keep track of gift ideas?
Keep a short list for each person and add to it the moment someone mentions something they'd like. Keeping it on your phone means it is with you when the idea comes up.
How can my family avoid buying the same present?
Use one shared list for each person. In Family Errands, share the birthday with the family members who buy with you: everyone it's shared with sees the same gift ideas and what's already planned.
When should I start thinking about a birthday present?
Collecting ideas works all year; choosing one usually happens a week or two before the date. A reminder at that point leaves time to buy or order the present.
